During the 18th and 19th century pubs were more common than they are today. In the Widcombe area alone over the years there have been at least 32 different pubs. There are many reasons for this. Firstly most people did not have ready access to transport and so tended to seek their leisure pursuits closer to home Pubs were one of the few places that people could meet socially in the evenings. Also there were fewer alternative forms of entertainment and shops didn’t sell drinks.
